The story

In the final days before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, military attache General Itzick Segev is busy closing Israel's embassy in Tehran, helping Persian Jews escape, and shielding his family from the mounting violence towards anyone linked to Israel and the West. Amid this storm, his mentor General Avraham Yoffe, now the head of Israel's Nature Reserves, shows up unexpectedly in Tehran. The Shah has secretly agreed to give Israel four Mesopotamian fallow deer, a species mentioned in the Bible yet long extinct in Israel, for the purpose of breeding them and saving the species. When Yoffe has a heart attack and is evacuated home, he makes Segev promise to finish the mission and sends his emissary Mike van Grevenbroek, a Dutch zoologist, to deal with the animals. Together with Iranian conservation official Farhad Afshar, Segev and van Grevenbroek overcome national and cultural differences in a race to get the deer, Segev's family, and the remaining 33 embassy employees, safely to Israel before it's too late.
